MGR Online: The United States Deputy Secretary of Defense is traveling to Thailand and Cambodia, raising the temperature of the competition for influence at a time when both Thailand and Cambodia are seeking support from major powers.
Elbridge Andrew Colby, the US Deputy Secretary of Defense, along with a high-level delegation, made an official visit to Thailand from 12–13 August 2026 to hold discussions and strengthen defense cooperation between Thailand and the United States.
Thailand's Ministry of Defense hosted a reception, with General Adul Boonthammacharen, the Minister of Defense, serving as host, and General Anupap Sirimondol, Chief of the Joint Staff to the Commander, attending as a representative of the Royal Thai Army.
This visit reflects the close relationship between Thailand and the United States, particularly in the area of military cooperation. Both sides are committed to developing defense activities for their mutual benefit.
Elbridge Andrew Colby is a security studies scholar who graduated from Harvard and Yale universities. He previously served as US Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Strategy and Force Development, playing a key role in shaping national defense strategy. He currently serves as Under Secretary of Defense for Policy, responsible for setting the direction of cooperation with allies. This visit to Thailand is considered significant for strengthening security in the region.
Later this afternoon, Mr. Colby and his delegation are scheduled to meet with Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul to discuss issues of security cooperation and to further strengthen the Thailand–US alliance, before departing onward to Cambodia.
