Meanwhile, the secretary-general says the matter should be left to the legal process, affirming the party will not protect those in the wrong.
On Wednesday (13 Aug.), Mr. Abhisit Vejjajiva, a party-list MP and leader of the Democrat Party, spoke about the case of Mr. Chaichana Detdecho, a party-list MP and deputy party leader, who has been charged with bodily harm against the deputy superintendent of Thung Yai Police Station, arising from an incident at a funeral. He said the party is in the process of thoroughly examining information and facts. Preliminarily, he has already spoken with Mr. Chaichana, but is asking for time for the party to verify the facts first, and that if the details become clear, he will inform the public again.
Mr. Chaiwut Bannawat, a party-list MP and secretary-general of the Democrat Party, said he is not yet aware of the details of the incident, as he has not yet spoken with Mr. Chaichana. However, now that a formal complaint has been filed and legal proceedings have been initiated, the matter must be allowed to follow the legal process. The party will not interfere, overstep, or intervene.
As for any internal party action, if this is a case that may cause damage to the party, all sides must be heard and the facts must be verified, and action may be taken in accordance with party regulations, such as establishing an investigation committee.
"The party has not been ignoring what has occurred. We must comply with party regulations, but now that the matter has entered the legal process, it must be allowed to proceed accordingly," Mr. Chaiwut said.
