On 12 August 2026, "Qi Meng," a 24-year-old Chinese woman who had been out of contact in Thailand for more than a week, made a move on her personal social media account, posting a message stating that she had already returned safely to China. She explained that her earlier silence was due to her mobile phone going missing, and she thanked everyone for their concern. The IP location attached to the post showed Beijing Capital International Airport.
Furthermore, the post included a photograph bearing a watermark clearly indicating the location and time as "Beijing Capital International Airport, 12 August 2026, 10:55 a.m."
However, the post raised considerable doubts among netizens, as it was found to have been edited multiple times. The name used in the caption was also changed from "qm" to "Xiao Meng," and some comments in the comment section had been deleted. This led to speculation over whether her social media account may have been taken over by someone else. As of the evening of 12 August, no real-time video appearance, official confirmation from relatives, or travel records independently verifiable from other sources had emerged.
Earlier reports indicated that Qi Meng was travelling abroad for the first time. She had visited Malaysia before flying to Bangkok. Her close friend revealed during a livestream that after leaving the airport, Qi Meng was taken in by a stranger who claimed they would "give her a lift to Chiang Mai province." After getting into that vehicle, she completely lost contact with the outside world.
The Embassy of the People's Republic of China in Thailand disclosed on 11 August that the embassy had been contacted by Qi Meng's family requesting assistance. It said it had informed the family of the procedures and requirements of the Thai police, and confirmed that it would continue to coordinate assistance for the family closely.
