Nakhon Phanom — The Mekong River continues to rise, affecting Ban Phaeng District as floodwaters overflow into riverside homes, inundating more than 30 houses and damaging over 1,000 rai of agricultural land. Ranger soldiers have joined forces with local administrative officials to urgently help residents move their belongings, livestock, and bedridden patients to safety, while personnel have been deployed to maintain round-the-clock surveillance amid fears that additional water flowing down from the north could widen the impact.
This morning (10 Aug.), a reporter covering the situation in Ban Phaeng District, Nakhon Phanom Province, stated that the Mekong River has been rising continuously, causing impacts on communities and agricultural areas along the riverbank — particularly Ban Don Phaeng in Ban Phaeng Sub-district, where water has begun overflowing into residential areas.
Col. Sorannat Nuanmanee, Commanding Officer of the 21st Ranger Regiment and Commander of Ranger Special Task Force 21, assigned Lt. Wanchat Mueanpeun, Commanding Officer of Ranger Special Task Force Company 2101, to lead personnel in coordination with local administrative officials to survey the damage and urgently provide assistance to affected residents.
According to a preliminary survey, more than 30 households in the Ban Don Phaeng area along the riverbank have already been affected by flooding. Officials have been urgently helping residents move belongings and essential items to higher ground, relocating livestock, and evacuating bedridden patients from at-risk areas to safe locations.
At the same time, officials have distributed daily necessities and essential supplies to help alleviate the hardship of affected families.
In addition to residential properties, Mekong floodwaters have also inundated agricultural land adjacent to the river over a wide area. Initial assessments estimate that more than 1,000 rai have already been submerged, with the potential for further impact if water levels continue to rise.
Local agencies have therefore deployed personnel to monitor the situation and stand ready to assist residents around the clock, as Mekong water levels still show a tendency to rise — especially if heavy rainfall continues in the area or if additional water mass flows down from upstream, which could cause further overflow into low-lying areas and riverside communities.
Officials have urged residents in at-risk areas along the Mekong to closely follow official announcements, and to move valuables, electrical appliances, and agricultural equipment to higher ground, as well as to prepare to evacuate vulnerable groups, the elderly, and bedridden patients should water levels rise further.
The flood situation along the Mekong in Ban Phaeng District remains under close watch, as water levels continue to rise and riverside areas are the first to bear the brunt of the overflowing Mekong.
