Stressed! Grandparents Pressured Him Over Studies — Police Reveal Motive of Grade 9 Shooter

MGR Online — Police have revealed the motive behind the school shooting carried out by a Grade 9 student at Debsirin Nonthaburi School, saying he was believed to have been under severe stress due to academic pressure from his grandparents.

Today (7 Aug.), a report from senior police officials regarding the shooting incident at Debsirin Nonthaburi School — which left multiple people dead and injured, including the perpetrator's own grandparents — stated that an investigation into the motive of the perpetrator, a Mathayom 3 (Grade 9) student, has preliminarily indicated that it may have stemmed from stress over his studies. Initial information revealed that his parents had separated and that he had been raised by his paternal grandparents. Investigators believe the motive was rooted in intense academic pressure imposed by his grandfather, a retired employee of the Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives (BAAC), who, upon retirement, retained the right to possess a firearm. His grandmother, also a retired government schoolteacher, was said to be very strict about academic matters — to the point where the boy may have developed significant stress.

It was also notable that all five people killed in the shooting were teachers at the school. Debsirin Nonthaburi School is a public school under the Nonthaburi Secondary Educational Service Area Office, Office of the Basic Education Commission, Ministry of Education. It offers instruction from Mathayom 1 through 6 (Grades 7–12) and is considered one of the leading schools in Nonthaburi Province, with a notably high level of academic competition.
