The Port Authority of Thailand (PAT) has strengthened security readiness at Bangkok Port in line with international standards, conducting a drill to respond to the smuggling of radioactive substances. The exercise tested the preparedness of personnel, communication systems, and inter-agency coordination to ensure rapid and safe control of emergency situations.
Bangkok Port held its annual ISPS Code Workshop for 2026, presided over by Mr. Thaemsin Sribangplinoi, Deputy Director of Bangkok Port, together with PAT executives and staff, as well as representatives from the Marine Department, the Customs Department, the Thailand Institute of Nuclear Technology, the Department of Disease Control, the International Disease Control Station, the Port Metropolitan Police Station, and the Khlong Toei District Office, among others. The event was held on 11 August 2026 at the Riverside Conference Room, OB Building, Bangkok Port.
Mr. Thaemsin said the drill was aimed at ensuring that all agencies understand their roles and operational procedures in the event of an actual incident, particularly incidents involving radioactive substances, which require rapid situation control and systematic inter-agency cooperation. The results of the drill will be used to review and improve Bangkok Port's emergency response plans and procedures to make them more effective.
The event included realistic scenario simulations along with demonstrations of radioactive substance detection and retrieval, incident containment, and evacuation, led by experts from the Office of Atoms for Peace, so that personnel could engage in hands-on practice and test inter-agency communications under emergency conditions.
The drill also formed part of Bangkok Port's security operations monitoring by the Marine Department in accordance with the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code (ISPS Code) of the International Maritime Organization (IMO). Bangkok Port has incorporated recommendations from relevant agencies, including the U.S. Coast Guard, to further develop its security systems, enhance emergency response readiness, and build confidence in Bangkok Port's operations in accordance with international standards.
