PM Holds Emergency Security Meeting After Surge of Unrest in Deep South, Before Flying to Nan and Ubon Ratchathani to Monitor Floods and Visit Soldiers Injured in Mine-Clearing Operation

"Anutin" convenes urgent national security meeting lasting over an hour following multiple simultaneous incidents of unrest in the southernmost border provinces, before leading a delegation by air to Nan and Ubon Ratchathani to monitor the flood situation, accelerate post-flood relief efforts, and visit soldiers injured during a mine-clearing operation.

Today (23 Aug 2025), at 09:00 hrs., Mr. Anutin Charnvirakul, Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, dressed in the uniform of Nayok Ong Yai — the uniform of the Volunteer Defence Corps (Or So.) — departed from Military Airport 2, Wing 6 (BN.6) aboard a Royal Thai Army Embraer aircraft to conduct an official inspection of Nan Province and Ubon Ratchathani Province. Members of the delegation included General Adul Boonthammachai, Minister of Defence; Mr. Suriya Juangroongruangkit, Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives; Mr. Jesada Thaiset, Deputy Minister of Interior; General Pana Klaewplodthuk, Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Thai Army; General Chaiyapruek Duangprapad, Chief of Staff of the Royal Thai Army; Miss Traisuli Traisaranakul, Secretary-General to the Prime Minister; Mr. Arrasit Samphanratan, Permanent Secretary for Interior; Mr. Naruecha Khosasiwilai, Director-General of the Department of Provincial Administration; and Mr. Nirat Phongsitthithawon, Deputy Permanent Secretary for Interior.

The delegation was scheduled to arrive at Nan Nakhon Airport at approximately 10:00 hrs., before proceeding to the Nan Provincial Hall in Chai Sathan Sub-district, Mueang Nan District, where the Prime Minister would preside over a meeting to monitor the flood situation and follow up on efforts to resolve flooding problems in the Northern and Northeastern regions, as well as to hear about local problems and needs, so that post-flood relief and rehabilitation measures could be implemented as quickly as possible.

The Prime Minister and the delegation were also set to travel to Ban Rong in Pua District, one of the areas damaged in the flooding. Pua District is considered one of the areas that was severely affected in the early stages of the disaster, after heavy rainfall and flash floods rapidly inundated homes, roads, and communities, forcing officials and rescue teams to mobilise and evacuate residents. Floodwaters have since gradually receded and the area is now in the recovery phase.

The Prime Minister and the delegation were then scheduled to visit Suan Tan Lang Community in Mueang Nan Municipality, a second damaged site, to follow up on rehabilitation and clean-up operations and to offer moral support to residents affected by the flooding.

The Prime Minister was subsequently scheduled to continue to Ubon Ratchathani Province to visit and offer encouragement to personnel from the Humanitarian Mine Action unit who were severely injured after stepping on a landmine while on duty in the area of Chong An Ma, Nam Yuen District, Ubon Ratchathani Province, on 17 August this year.

Reporters noted that prior to departing for Nan Province, Anutin summoned security agencies for a closed-door discussion in a reception room regarding the unrest in the southern border provinces, which had broken out simultaneously at multiple locations. The meeting lasted over an hour and members of the media were not permitted to enter to record images.
