CHIANG MAI — The governor of Chiang Mai has issued strict orders to all 25 districts to enforce a complete ban on burning activities as the province continues to struggle with hazardous air pollution levels exceeding national standards. The directive aims to prevent further deterioration of air quality during the upcoming Songkran festival period, Thailand's traditional New Year celebration in mid-April.
The measure comes as multiple areas across Chiang Mai remain shrouded in smoke and haze from forest fires, with pollution indices significantly above safe limits. Authorities have deployed resources across all districts to monitor and prevent burning incidents at high-risk locations throughout the Songkran period. Weather forecasts indicate that atmospheric conditions may worsen, with reduced air circulation expected in the coming days, prompting heightened vigilance from provincial officials.
